WINE AND BAR
Wine Director John Dalesandro manages a wine list and bar menu designed to augment Storefront Company’s thoughtful cuisine. He has handpicked 40 bottles and 16 by-the-glass selections from boutique winemakers across the globe, including Domaine Fouassier Sancerre 2010 Les Romaines (France), Beaux Fréres Pinot Noir 2010 Willamette Valley (Oregon), and Domaine Des Sénéchaux Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2009 (France). He has also identified nine food-friendly craft and import beers, such as Saugatuck Oval Beach Blonde Ale (Michigan) and Schlenkerla Smoked Märzen (Germany). “The wine and beer offerings are all about quality and a balanced representation of the world,” says Dalesandro. “We wanted to first and foremost keep Chef Bryan’s food in mind when pairing all of our beverages."
The “Kitchen Cocktails” menu demonstrates Moscatello’s seasonally modern culinary vision in liquid form, with a focus on boutique producers. Selections include; Apple, featuring a blend of Journeyman rum, cider, black walnut bitters, lime, and egg white; and Ginger, a fusion of No. 3 gin, King’s Ginger liqueur, and Imbue vermouth wash. The bar also offers its takes on classic cocktails, including a “new” New Fashioned, the Bobby Burns, and a Martinez. Additionally, Storefront Company offers non-alcoholic specialty mixed drinks, such as the Sparkling Bloog Orange with tarragon syrup and fresh lime juice.
DESIGN AND DÉCOR
The restaurant is nestled among the boutique shopping and retail hot spots that dot the North Avenue and Damen Avenue corridor in Wicker Park, which provided the inspiration for the restaurant’s name. Storefront Company offers a comfortable yet artistically inspired dining space in 2,500 square feet. “we wanted the design to embody the soul of Wicker Park,” says Harris, who personally designed the space with the team. “I love this neighborhood because it was founded by artists and still draws the open-minded and diverse" adds Gassel.
Anchoring the 65-seat main dining room, a modern art installation by local muralist Gary Weidner serves as a focal point. The 34- by 13-foot mixed-media collage of dried flowers found in a Chicago snowscape is integrated into the 100-year-old wall.
Storefront’s design is a smart mix of contemporary boutique-inspired styling, commissioned art, clever custom design elements, and dramatic lighting accenting the modern finishes and classic architecture. The unique ‘square’ footprint and clean décor exemplify refinement in a hip and casual atmosphere.
